MUDEM-RSC’s Conference “Immigration and Immigrants: Social Cohesion, Achievements, and Obstacles” in Ordu

Mülteci Destek Derneği – Refugee Support Center (MUDEM-RSC), in cooperation with the Governorship of Ordu and the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management, held a conference named “Immigration and Immigrants: Social Cohesion, Achievements, and Obstacles”. While the conference, which hosted participants from various international organizations, was the first of its kind in terms of dwelling on such themes as immigrants and social cohesion, it took place in Ordu Culture and Art Center, with Seddar Yavuz, the Governor of Ordu, as its host.

Remarks on the increasing number of immigrants across the globe

As an impartial and unbiased NGO, Mülteci Destek Derneği – Refugee Support Center (MUDEM-RSC) continues to draw attention to the increase in the number of immigrants who have been compelled to abandon their homelands due to rapid increase in violence and conflict around the globe. MUDEM-RSC Ordu Sustainable Living Center, funded by the European Union, held a conference in cooperation with the Governorship of Ordu and the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management, within the context of “Improved Support for Refugees in Turkey Affected by Crises in Iraq and Syria” project. In the conference, immigrants living in Ordu and across Turkey, and solution suggestions were discussed with reference to social cohesion. The conference started with speeches by; Safa Karataş, General Coordinator of MUDEM-RSC; Abdülkadir Katırcıoğlu, Director of the Provincial Directorate of Migration; Prof. Dr. Tarık Yarılgaç, Rector at Ordu University; Engin Tekintaş, Metropolitan Mayor of Ordu, and Adem Öztürk, Lieutenant Governor of Ordu. While Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saime Özçürümez from Bilkent University did the moderation of the conference, The conference, moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saime Özçürümez from Bilkent University continued with speeches made by İbrahim Vurgun Kavlak, the General Coordinator of  Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants; İhsan Reşat Özkan, Representative Agent of UNHCR; Polat Kızıldağ, Child Protection Officer at UNICEF, and Eren Özdemir, Programme Officer at WFP.

Debates on the problems of immigrants and solution suggestions

Using various aspects to approach the notions “immigration and immigrant” that, with the recent influx of immigrants, have become a matter of debate in Turkey and around the world, the participants –representing INGOs, NGOs, and governmental institutions- to the conference put forth suggestions for solutions they have developed against the problems they have identified through their experiences, endeavors, and efforts. Turkey’s experiences with regards to social cohesion were discussed since it has been affected by the influx of immigrants as a country of transit.

After the conference, the artworks with such theme as “Living Together”, made by Iraqi, Iranian, and Turkish artists, were demonstrated with cooperation of Mülteci Destek Derneği – Refugee Support Center (MUDEM-RSC), Provincial Directorate of Migration Management of Ordu, and Penbe İzzet Şahin Fine Arts Highschool.
